Understanding Your Ultrasound Experience

If your provider has recommended an ultrasound exam, you can feel confident that it’s a safe, non-invasive imaging procedure that provides real-time insights into your health. We focus on delivering a seamless, supportive experience—so you feel informed, comfortable, and cared for at every step.

Ultrasound imaging (also called sonography) uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of structures inside the body. It’s commonly used to evaluate organs, soft tissues, blood flow, and pregnancy without radiation.

What Is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan is a widely used diagnostic imaging exam that helps providers assess and diagnose a variety of conditions. It may be used for:

  • Abdominal and pelvic imaging
  • Obstetric and prenatal exams
  • Vascular and blood flow studies
  • Thyroid, breast, or soft tissue evaluation

Because ultrasound is radiation-free and non-invasive, it’s often a preferred first step in diagnosis and ongoing monitoring.

Arrival & Check-In

When you arrive for your ultrasound appointment, our front office team will welcome you and assist with check-in. This process typically includes:

  • Confirming your appointment details
  • Verifying identification and insurance information
  • Completing any remaining registration forms

If you did not complete online check-in in advance, our team will help you finish it quickly—either on your mobile device or in the center.

Depending on your exam type, we may also confirm that you followed any preparation instructions, such as fasting or drinking water. These steps are important for ensuring the most accurate imaging results.

Preparing for Your Ultrasound

Once checked in, our clinical team will be notified that you’re ready. When it’s time for your exam, a technologist will:

  • Call you from the lobby
  • Escort you to a private exam room
  • Introduce themselves and confirm your exam type
  • Review your medical history and any relevant details

Depending on the exam, you may be asked to change into a gown. Your privacy is always respected, and you’ll be given time and space to change comfortably.

Before the exam begins, your technologist will explain the procedure, including what to expect and how long it will take.

For certain exams, including some women’s imaging studies, a female chaperone can be present upon request or as part of standard protocol.

During Your Ultrasound Exam

During the ultrasound, the technologist will use a handheld device called a transducer to capture images. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin to help the device glide smoothly and produce clear images.

You may be asked to:

  • Adjust your position slightly
  • Hold your breath briefly
  • Remain still for short periods

Many patients find the exam to be comfortable and even conversational, as the technologist may talk with you throughout to help you feel at ease.

Ultrasound exams are typically quick and well-tolerated, though the exact duration depends on the type of study being performed.

After Your Ultrasound

Once your scan is complete:

  • You’ll have time to change back into your clothing, if needed
  • The technologist will review next steps and answer any questions
  • You’ll be guided back to the lobby

In most cases, no formal checkout is required unless additional paperwork or payment is needed.

A board-certified radiologist will review your images and send a detailed report to your referring provider. Your provider will then discuss your results and any recommended next steps with you.
